I’ve had the opportunity to spend a week on Thasos, a wonderful Greek island. It is full of beautiful beaches, mountains, and forests, and we’ve had the chance to explore a lot of it. I brought my camera with me, and took photos while we were exploring the landscapes.
The Aegian sea was clean, with a wonderful turquoise color. With a steep coast, it’s a quick transition from the beaches to the mountains. The narrow streets and winding roads were a challenge to navigate, but the views were worth it.
Our first sightseeing stop was Limenas, one of the cities where the ferries arrive from the mainland, located at the northern part of the island. It’s a relatively short walk from the port to the Acropolis of Ancient Thasos, with a view of the Karnagio Beach Bar, a church of the holy apostoles, an ancient theater and a constant sight of the sea.
We spent the evening at one of the bars in Skala Potamias, a beach town on the eastern side of the island. During the day, the streets and the many restaurants were practically empty, to my surprise, as people simply spent their entire day at the beach and ate out in the evening. I was able to take some photos in the evening, and meet a very friendly dog. We also saw a bunch of stray cats, they seemed to be accustomed to the tourists.
Our next sightseeing trip was to the southern part of the island, where we visited Aliki Beach. On the east side of the isle, there is an archeological site with a marble quarry. In a relaxed pace, one can take a few hours to explore the area, and enjoy the view of the sea. The paths are clearly laid out and they take you around the isle, creating a circle starting at the beach. After the walk, we ate at Taverna Leonidas, then rented a set of sunbeds and spent the rest of the afternoon at the beach. The waters were crystal clear, just like everywhere else around the island.
While we took our walks at possibly one of the worst times for photography (and for any kind of hiking, basically), in the midday sun in summer, the views were still breathtaking. The island is full of life, with a lot of greenery, and the sea is always close by. The places we visited provide ample opportunities for shooting beautiful sunsets.
